During the school shutdowns, we’ve decided to launch a (very) informal, impromptu, virtual marine biology camp. Follow us on Facebook or Instagram, and you should see us in your news feed when we go live, Mondays and Thursdays at 11 am Pacific time. For Paddington Bear fans, you’ll note that this is conveniently timed to coincide with elevenses. We’ve been using this as an excuse to bake yummy treats, for educational purposes of course. The recipes help us practice our reading and math skills. What are you making for Monday’s elevenses?
Thanks, GeekWire, for the great profile of this event. We did this primarily as parents of an almost six-year-old kid who is really missing her friends. Please like, comment, share, and tell us in the comments below what you’d like to see us cover in future episodes. We’ll keep this up as a free community service as long as schools are closed, kids are interested, and our nonprofit team has the capacity to keep up with demand.

Are you going to continue this through the summer? I teach adult literacy and a lot of my students live in an inner-city area have kids who are going to be stuck inside during the summer. It would be great if they could do an online camp like this.
Hi Jennifer, Our first Virtual Marine Biology Camp ended in May. So we are not currently producing any new episodes, although we might later in the year. We are just about to start our field season, so we will be out studying whales and dolphins throughout the summer. We may try to broadcast live from the field but we are not certain. Be sure to follow our Facebook and/or Instagram pages. If we have future episodes, we’ll announce them on social media as well as on our website. Thanks very much, The Oceans Initiative Team
Hi there
Did you still have the virtual marine camp every week?
Thank you for this wonderful idea.
Hi Carolina, Our first Virtual Marine Biology Camp ran from March to the beginning of May. So we are not currently producing any new episodes, although we might later in the year. Be sure to follow our Facebook and/or Instagram pages… if we have future episodes, we’ll announce them there in addition to on our website. Thanks very much, The Oceans Initiative Team

What do we do if we don’t have Facebook or Insta???
You can watch the videos afterward on our site, or on our Vimeo or YouTube channels. There’s a limit to how many platforms we can take on for live streaming. Some services charge $300/month for a platform that can reach 1000 participants, and as a small nonprofit, we can’t justify that expense. You might consider setting up a free, private IG account if you’d like to participate live. Thanks!
As a land locked family this is pretty exciting. See ya Monday.
What ages is this geared to?
Will I be able to access these videos after they air?
Thanks! https://oceansinitiative.org/virtual-marine-biology-field-camp-frequently-asked-questions-faqs/
THANKYOU FOR DOING THIS!!
Thanks!!
It says 11 am PST. I thought we were on PDT right now. Please let us know which is correct. I want to make sure my students don’t miss this.
Correct! https://oceansinitiative.org/virtual-marine-biology-field-camp-frequently-asked-questions-faqs/
Thankyou for this wonderful service. We are fortunate and have a backyard and beach near. So we get out daily for fresh air.
Thanks!
Hurrah for sharing. I have grandkids who spend every visit with us down on the front rocks noting every kind of fish they find. They will be in your front row on Monday!
Audrey
Hi, is there any chance you could record the marine biology camp for those in the Southern Hemisphere?
Thanks! https://oceansinitiative.org/virtual-marine-biology-field-camp-frequently-asked-questions-faqs/
I would love to join this. And have a masters in aquatic biology so would be happy to do a lesson on the food web. I was a zooplankton specialist doing Great Lakes food web/bio magnification research. Happy to pitch in. Jenn
Great program!! Will you be recording? Have a keen marine biologist but we’re in Australia so that’s 430 am for us!
Thanks! https://oceansinitiative.org/virtual-marine-biology-field-camp-frequently-asked-questions-faqs/

This is great!! Can you give me some idea of the target age group, imagine that it’s for children up to say, 10-11? My son would love this, but he’s a little older (13). Just shared this on FB.
Thanks! https://oceansinitiative.org/virtual-marine-biology-field-camp-frequently-asked-questions-faqs/ Can anyone weigh in on ages of kids watching?

Will they be available to watch afterwards or is it only live?
