Team – Kimberly Nielsen

Research Associate

I am a marine ecologist and I joined Oceans Initiative in 2020. My work as a Research Associate supports a spectrum of our team’s research activities, from grant writing and fieldwork, to modeling data and writing papers for scientific journals. I received my undergraduate degree in Marine Science and Biology from the University of San Diego and have a Master’s in Marine Biology from the University of Plymouth.

I love science, and I’ve been lucky enough to travel the world while studying how vulnerable, wide-ranging species like sea turtles and cetaceans respond to changes in their environment. My research interests are rooted in spatial ecology, population dynamics, oceanography, and behavior, and I’m most motivated by work that informs conservation management. Outside of our work at Oceans Initiative, I love backpacking, paddle sports, reading, and nature photography.
